Time Marches On

November is here! Where has this year gone.

The older I get the more I understand the saying that time flies. It really does. The steady march of time is the most constant reality of the human experience.

I look back over this year and I am just amazed. I am amazed at how much has happened—the Cubs are in a World Series! And I am amazed at how little has changed—I still feel the same as I did on January 1.

I am the same person and yet I am different. I know things that I did not know before, and I have forgotten more things than I realize as well. It is just weird. And yet it is so normal. The most normal of things.

There is a mystery to this thing we call life. And for me, it revolves around the fact that for every day I live on this earth, that is one more day when I am able to reflect on what new lesson I have experienced. Each lesson is an opportunity to understand myself and the world a little bit better. That is, if I take the time to do it.

It may be a natural shift in life. The shift from naive youngster to more mature, seasoned adult. It just seems that when you get closer to seeing yourself as one of the adults you always wanted to be—mature, wise, self-assured—you start to realize you may be a little off in your assumption. I would not say that I am any of these things. What I am learning is that maybe the people I thought who were like this, may in fact not have been so. We all just get better recognizing the pitfalls to our choices. Maybe that is wisdom. Seeing things before they happen.

It can be a startling realization, to see that what you believed was true about others is not the case. As I continue my 36th year of life I am hoping to be wiser tomorrow than I was today. To be shrewder tomorrow than I was today. To be more aware of my life than I was today.

I may not do it as well as I would like, but I noticed today. So, I want to be sure not to miss the opportunity I have today. Neither should you.

Take a minute to reflect on where you are today. Right now.

  • What have you learned?
  • How have you changed or matured?
  • What are you going to do today to make better choices tomorrow?
